VirtualDub Video Editor and Supported Formats
VirtualDub is an open source video capturing and processing application for Windows. So, it’s free, which is always a good start.
It’s though not a real fully blown competitor for the powerful video editors such as Adobe Premiere Pro. It lacks many of the video editing features. Its advantages though are that it provide the ability to batch process large number of files and it can also be extended by many filters (for example, a sharpening filter, a color correction filter, resizing and many other video effects).
VirtualDub allows to import only AVI files, which usually limits the options for editing popular video files in formats like MP4, MKV, FLV, and others. Therefore, if you have a video file in a different format, such as MP4, you should go ahead and convert it to AVI prior to importing it to VirtualDub.
In most cases, if you won’t perform this conversion and just try to import your video file to VirtualDub, you’ll end up with the following error: “The file <xx> is of an unknown or unsupported file type.”.
